This was my uncomfortable experience on a Zoom call recently, why it happened, and how I dealt with it.

Daniel Goleman, arguably the kingpin of emotional intelligence, found that the five most typical triggers of an amygdala hijack in the workplace are:

  1. lack of respect

  2. unfair treatment

  3. being unappreciated

  4. not being heard

  5. unrealistic deadlines

In general terms, we feel triggered when we sense that something is threatening. It may not be real (it wasn't in this situation) but it's our perception in the moment that matters. In today’s world, these threats are usually not physical threats, but social threats which impact our “social brain.”
